Obsidian Trail

Three Sisters Wilderness, Oregon

Time - 2 Days

Distance- 12 miles

Overview: The obsidian trail is located on the flanks of North Sister near McKenzie Pass.  The area contains a seris of lava fields on the flanks of 10,085 volcano North Sister.  Just beyond the Jerry Lava Flow the we made the hike a partial loop . It was late season and we knew it might be cold at night.  What we did not expect was waking up to a snow covered ground and a flurry of snow on the hike out.  Sam, Mark, Mik and myself - the crew headed out.

Trail begins through a deep forest then opens up quite dramatically up and over lava flows.  Large areas of black looking glass of obsidian glittered beside the trail.

After hitting Obsidian falls we continued south for another 10 min on the PCT to a nearby ridge to make camp.

We camped just beyond the border of the no-fire zone.  That was a good thing because I did bring all the layers needed for these temperatures.  The fire was key to keeping us warm that evening and the next chilly morning.  No blue lips for me Mark!

The hike out was unique with a layer of fresh snow blanketing everything. This shot would be on our 07 Christmas cards.

It was a fresh, crisp, chilly, enjoyable hike out.
