Mt Tallac    Fallen Leaf to Bayview   (Tahoe, CA)

Total Miles- 12   Time- 8 1/2 hrs

Mt Tallac would be our first destination on this long hike.  My dad and I left one car at the Bayview trailhead and another at the Mt. Tallac trailhead.  Our plans were to leave the Tallac trailhead, summit the mountain, then hike west over Dicks pass and out at Emerald bay.

Tallac is the large mountain behind me.

This is the pass that the trail climbs before following the ridgeline to the summit.

As soon as we got to the top, we got blasted by wind- jackets now on.  From the ridge there is a great view of the Crystal range in the distance.

We made the summit in about 2 1/2 hrs.  It was a bit cold and windy up there and not much sun.  The view up here is amazing having a panorama of Lake Tahoe and Desolation Wilderness to the west.

At this point we were at Gilmore lake and Dad was a little bit worried that the hike would be much longer than expected.  We had lunch here and moved on towards Dicks pass.

Half moon lake below Dicks Peak.  We were slowly climbing up towards Dicks pass with excellent views west.

The sun finally came out and it felt great.

After a relatively easy climb we were at the top of Dicks pass looking down on Dicks lake and Fontanas lake of the left.

Looking South.  The views seemed to stretch on forever.

We would make our way straight over this terrain towards lake Tahoe in the distance.

The last section was steep with panoramic views of Emerald Bay and Lake Tahoe. It can't much better than this day hike.  It was long, but always a new horizon waited around every bend.  You see many of the Lakes in Desolation Wilderness and feel like you are walking through the heart of it and able see so much of it in one day.  Add in the the summit of Tallac and the numerous views of Tahoe and you get a day hike to be named as one of Tahoe's best.
