Broken Top and Paulina Peak

May 09

Overview: Hargs birthday weekend would be supercharged with a snowmobile for the weekend. Mike arrived from SF late Friday night ready to go for Saturday morning. We pulled into Dutchman flat parking lot early the next morning and began the shuttle up each person with the snomobile to the wilderness boundary. It took about 30 minutes per person to get back to the lot, but overall the sled rocked and the shuttle was no problem. From there we had an easy skin up to the bowl of broken top with little elevation gain. We each took about 3 runs and had a full day before heading back out. Sunday morning the crew was back at it, this time to Paulina peak. We were all pretty beat from the day before so it was a very nice luxury to be able to take the sled all the way to the top. Harg was genius with the bike tubes (to give the tow a little give) to put at the end of not one - but two!! ropes behind the sled , and we were able to get all 4 of us up in one go. We got some damn good use out of the sled for the weekend and toured some of central Oregons best backcounty spots.

Fueled and ready.

We shuttled one at a time up to the 3 sisters wilderness boundary. Sleds are not allowed past this point.

Back on the 15 minute ride to pick up another person at Dutchman

Snow still pretty firm on the hike in

Put skins on here for the rest of the way

Dan heading straight up 11' Oclock. While I was hiking up the face I felt very exposed of rockfall in the area and ended up climbing the 4th class rock on the right side of the picture with my board on my back. I had the most sketchy strap in ever on a nub of snow near the top of that rock.

gearing up at the top, Harg takes the sled back down and does some boondocking in the trees to find a pickup point for us.

We did this run twice straight off the top of the peak into the bowl. It required a short hike out through the trees back to the road.
