Midnight Lake (John Muir Wilderness) 3 Days Total Miles- 28 My Father and I headed to The Eastern Sierras for a backpacking trip. It was my first time in the southern Sierras and I had no idea how massive the mountains would be. We camped the first night at a campground near South Lake. The next morning we kayaked around South Lake over the crystal calm water. It was a postcard setting and morning. This lake is another Sierra gem among the mountain peaks.
After kayaking the lake, we headed to the trailhead to begin our 2 night backpacking trip out of Lake Sabrina. The trail soon gained some vertical. Then we were below the grand Sierra Crest.
My Dad crossing the outlet of Blue Lake. The scenery here was the Sierras at its best.
We ended up going farther than the lake that we had planned and camped at. The lake that we planned to stay at was a bit wooded and not as scenic as expected. It was a good decision to explore further up the valley beneath these mammoth peaks. We were surrounded by 14'rs. Midnight Lake came into view and we settled in. It was a good spot right below the sierra crest. It would make a good base for tomorrows dayhike.
The next day we day hiked over a ridge from camp and ended up at Hungry Packer Lake, What a spot!

We saw a group of other hikers and they took our picture for us next to these cascades. The area below Hungry Packer contained lots of small streams and cascades. We took a short loop and headed back around to our camp at Midnight lake for the second night.
Dad on the hike out the next morning. Midnight lake was right up against the mountains behind him.
On the drive home we stopped at Convict Lake to do some more kayaking, it was a hot day and a nice relaxing paddle. Overall, It was another glorious Sierra backpacking trip. I love Hwy 395, when I die I am not going to see the light, I am going to see the junction for 395! HA. I am sure all of the trailheads along this stretch of mountains are just as good as fantastic as the areas we explored. The terrain is so massive and incredible. It would take more than a lifetime to thoroughly explore for sure.
